A Newbie’s Guide to Drinking Wine: Best food to pair with your Jacob’s Creek wine

Anyone else doing a quick Google search about wine etiquette before attending formal events? Because I do! It’s not something that you have to be ashamed of because not everyone has the privilege and time to drink wine every night. I’m nearing my 30s and yet, I still can’t seem to memorize all the names! Aside from wine etiquette, there are also different types of food pairings that we should be aware of to help bring out exquisite flavors. For newbies to wine drinking, here’s a short guide based on what I’ve learned from Jacob’s Creek Wine Ambassador Billy Brigham during their online wine tasting event last Thursday (March 24, 2022).

Jacob’s Creek is Australia’s number one bottled wine brand, with over 8,800 awards and over 170 years of heritage. Jacob’s Creek Classic stretches across a wide variety of red and white wines, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz Cabernet, Merlot, Chardonnay, and Riesling, just to name a few. These great-tasting wines come from a wide selection of popular varieties and blends sourced from some of Australia’s premium grape-growing regions.

SAUVIGNON BLANC

Probably one of the most popular white wines out there, Sauvignon Blanc is a light and crisp wine made out of green-skinned grapes. It even smells like freshly cut grass with a mix of tropical fruits! This type of wine is best paired with green salad – something like Greek salad or cucumber dill; white fish and shellfish like sea bass and oysters, as well as goat’s cheese, burrata, and feta.

CHARDONNAY

Compared with Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay is on the heavy and hearty side of white wine and it’s also aged for a few years. In terms of taste, it’s on the dry side, has oak notes, and has subtle flavors of honeycomb and vanilla. This type of wine goes well with buttery or nutty flavors that you can get from smoked/grilled fish like roasted salmon, creamy pastas like carbonara, cream soups, and chicken.

CABERNET SAUVIGNON

The deep purple appearance may seem intimidating to some, but Cabernet Sauvignon is actually a really good choice if you’re eating steak! It has herbaceous flavors mixed with bold black fruits, giving you the aroma of blackberry, black pepper, and clove. The taste lingers longer than other red wines. Best served with any kind of red meat – steak or lamb, slow roasted meat, prime rib, burger, and casserole.  If you want to serve it with cheese, go for hard cheeses like aged cheddar or gorgonzola.

MERLOT

The counterpart of Cabernet Sauvignon! Although both are considered dry red wines, Merlot has a fruitier flavor and goes down smoother. It tastes like a mix of cherries, plums, and blackberries, making it a great pair with grilled and roast beef, grilled or roast chicken, caramelized or roast vegetables, mushrooms, and even cheese like blue cheese or cheddar cheese.

SHIRAZ CABERNET

A full-bodied red wine with a blend of savory and spice. This red wine has a peppery and slightly smoky aroma with a taste of raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and a hint of pepper. Jacob’s Creek Shiraz Cabernet also goes well with pasta, casserole, and pork. You can also try it with grilled meats and vegetables, as well as aged hard cheeses like gouda.

Wine night to welcome the weekend!

When picking wine for a specific occasion, Brigham also advises that we choose something that goes well with what’s being served. We all have preferences when it comes to drinking wine, so it might also be best to check if the receiver is into red or white wine, too!

Drinking wine has long been associated with socialites and affluent members of society who can afford it, but times have changed! This premium staple is now made more affordable at Jacob’s Creek with prices starting at only Php 449. They’re even launching a new look for their wine bottles, with a bold, modern curved label harkening to the shape of the water from the namesake creek, as well as the shape of the wine swirling in the glass.

“With the refreshed look of Jacob’s Creek Classic here in the Philippines, we’re looking to capture a brand-new crowd of wine drinkers and show them that you can have premium bottles that’s worth sharing with friends and loved ones without breaking the bank. We’re confident that Jacob’s Creek Classic will be many Filipinos’ new favorite wine,” said Jacob’s Creek Brand Executive Kurt Ducusin

With these tips, I’m ready to experience wine nights at home without worrying about my expenses!
