Sometime around 2010, I had my first encounter with a digital “smart” scale which knows how to automatically compute for a person’s body mass index (BMI) upon inputting age and height. That became one of my favorite “gym equipment” back then as that kind of technology wasn’t widely available yet. Fast forward to 2021, smart scales can already be found everywhere and it’s just a matter of determining which one is the smartest for our health needs.
The best one that I’ve tried so far? The Huawei Scale 3 Pro. This Php 3,999 health smart scale has advanced measurement algorithms that enable professional-grade body composition analysis, it has a sleek and sturdy design, and is capable of really fast data transfer via Huawei Health app.
INSIDE THE BOX
Inside the box, you’ll find the scale, which already comes with four AA batteries, and a user manual. The box contains images on how to use the scale, but the app also shares a step-by-step guide once connected.
Here’s a quick list of pros and cons to consider before you get one for yourself:
PROS
High-precision measurements – I received the Huawei Scale 3 Pro during the week when I had my hospital check-ups so I know my accurate medical lab results. Amazingly, the eight dual-frequency electrodes complemented by the Huawei TruFit 2.0’s upgraded measurement algorithms were able to deliver very similar results. I had high protein, low BMI, and high blood pressure during that week, to name a few, and the scale was able to capture that in just a few minutes. Although the results provided by the Huawei Scale 3 Pro are only estimates and should not be considered final for medical reasons, I’m confident that it can help us determine whether or not we should already seek professional support. The Huawei TruFit 2.0 has been developed in collaboration with the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Hefei Institute of Material Science.
Easy-to-understand body indicators – The analysis reports based on 22 different professional indicators are very straightforward. It also comes with a brief description about what each indicator stands for and what you can do about your BMI stats in case it’s too low or too high. The Huawei Smart Scale 3 Pro delivers all of these in just a few clicks through the Huawei Health app.
Seamless WiFi and Bluetooth connection for data transfer – Even if you’re in a rush, it’s easy to connect your app to the scale to instantly get a detailed report via mobile. If you want someone else to try the scale, you can create a Guest profile for them and just screenshot or save the results for reference via the Huawei Health app. They can also connect their app separately as the Scale 3 Pro is capable of being used with up to 10 different accounts.
Aesthetically pleasing and user-friendly – This is one eye-catching scale! It has a matte texture with a mix of baby pink and light blue hues that look really pretty under bright lights. The color is very subtle when used indoors, though. The silver handles are also easy to grip, preventing it from slipping from your hands during body analysis.
Sturdy and functional – With a 320 x 320mm tempered glass and combination of ABS material (upper part) and silicone (bottom part), the base becomes more stable and safer for shock absorption. It’s also anti-skid with its matte-like texture. In case you’re worried about the thread connecting the handle to the scale, no need to worry because the handle adopts a magnetic design to ensure that it gets placed back properly and the thread is made out of Kevlar fiber with an outer layer of PP yarn. That’s already a strong combination! This device also passed the salt spray test, temperature shock test, controlled drop test at room temperature, short drop test, steel ball drop, and bending test, to name a few.
CONS
If you’re not familiar with the terms, it may be challenging to figure out what to do with the analysis report being presented. There is a gist about what each label stands for but I was hoping to see more tips, similar to what they have in smartwatches’ sleep monitor report. Although the Scale 3 Pro can provide tips on how to improve BMI via Health app, it’s not yet capable of sharing next steps on how to keep our stats on a healthy/normal level.
I also tried using the smart scale outdoors under bright sunlight, but it was challenging to read the numbers due to brightness. No issues when used indoors, though. Something to consider if you’re keeping your workout equipment outside your home.
That’s everything I can say, but the cons are manageable at the moment, in my opinion.
