Admit it or not, most of us learned the basics of feminine hygiene through awkward health class sessions, whispered tips from outspoken friends, or frantic Googling. That was the case for me as someone who grew up in a Catholic school where talking about private parts (and making love) were frowned upon outside Science class. But as 30-somethings now, it’s already time to openly talk about such topics and teach the younger generations, especially when it comes to perennial hygiene that could possibly save us from future infection and sickness.

This is why I’m glad that public discussions about such topics are now more accessible! During the launch of pH Care Ultra Sensitive Feminine Wash at Trinoma last July 30, Dra. Jennifer Narvaez, a certified Obstetrician and Gynecologist, shared practical hygiene tips that every woman (especially us millennial multitaskers!) should know. Spoiler alert: Some of our everyday habits might actually be doing more harm than good.
Here are 5 common mistakes we need to unlearn, stat according to Dra. Narvaez:

1. Washing in the wrong direction
Yes, there’s a right way to wash down there. Dra. Narvaez explained that washing should always be from front to back, not the other way around. Why? Because the anus is the dirtiest part, and you don’t want to introduce bacteria to the more sensitive areas of your vulva or vagina.
“That area is already considered sensitive per se but lot of factors can trigger even more sensitivities out there so good perennial hygiene plays a role. Like washing your intimate area should be one directional (front to back) and not back to front,” she shares.
Even when using a bidet, make sure the water flows toward the back, away from your intimate area. A simple habit that makes a huge difference!
2. Using panty liners every day
While they may seem like a good way to stay “fresh,” wearing panty liners daily isn’t ideal. “We actually don’t recommend that because it makes you more prone to getting infections,” Dra. Narvaez shared.
Your intimate area needs to breathe! Save the liners for special situations like post-period or when wearing tight leggings and such, but don’t make them a daily go-to.
3. Not changing your period products often enough
Tampons, menstrual cups, napkins — all of these need to be changed every 4 hours, max. Anything beyond that increases the risk of irritation and even infection. No matter how “high absorbency” your product is, always remember that the clock is ticking!
Set a reminder on your phone if needed! Your future self (and your intimate health) will thank you.
4. Choosing style over comfort in underwear
We love a cute, seamless undie or nylon thong moment but not every day. Dra. Narvaez reminded us that breathable cotton underwear is still the gold standard when it comes to everyday wear.
“Right now, it’s nice to wear mga nylon, mga seamless, ‘di ba? But on a daily basis, it’s better if we use cotton type because it’s more breathable,” she said. The goal is comfort and hygiene. Save the lacy fits for special occasions!
5. Using harsh soaps or OVERWASHING
“They wash too frequently,” Dra. Narvaez pointed out when asked about one of the most common causes of irritation. “So it’s important to take note that you have to wash on a regular basis lang — in the morning when you take your shower, before going to bed, if there’s intercourse, after you urinate, and then after bowel movement.”

You don’t need to scrub down every hour and most importantly, don’t use just any kind of soap! When you do wash, opt for a mild, pH-balanced feminine wash that’s designed to be gentle. Products like the pH Care Ultra Sensitive Feminine Wash, which is infused with natural ingredients and free from harsh chemicals, help maintain your skin’s natural barrier and thus, reducing dryness, irritation, and discomfort.

And if you’re already experiencing itchiness or sensitivity, it may be time to switch to something milder and of course, consult your OB-GYN.
Feminine hygiene doesn’t have to be complicated. With the right habits, breathable undies, regular washes (not too much, not too little), and gentle products like pH Care Ultra Sensitive, taking care of your intimate area can feel as natural as your skincare routine.
Remember: Being informed is empowering and your body deserves that kind of care!
