Don’t you hate it when brands who have not made even one single pledge of support for the LGBTQ+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Questioning Individuals) community suddenly goes all-out in putting rainbows in their social media collaterals, coupled with the #PRIDE hashtag on June 1, only to take it down a day after as if nothing happened? As an advertising professional, I have been wary of companies who proudly do this while dodging modern inclusivity practices that should have long been part of their systems. However, to end Pride Month on a happy note, let’s focus on a brand that I believe has long been a REAL ALLY — Durex.
Pride Month is a time to honor and support the LGBTQ+ community, and Durex (who doesn’t know Durex, the condom brand?), is proud to stand as an ally. Durex believes that pleasure knows no boundaries, regardless of gender or sexuality, both in everyday life and the bedroom. This June alone, Durex took part in various Pride Month events to spread the message of inclusive pleasure and the importance of unity in supporting the LGBTQIA+ community and here are five reasons why we should stan them:
1. All out support at the Metro Manila Pride March & Festival
One of the highlights of Durex’s Pride Month celebrations is its participation in the Metro Manila Pride March and Festival. As a prime sponsor, Durex joined the march at Circuit Event Grounds in Makati City last Saturday (June 24, 2023), embracing the theme “Tayo ang Kulayaan” which embodies the strength of diversity within the LGBTQIA+ community.
“Durex supports this year’s Pride March and encourages everyone to join the march to show our solidarity and support for the LGBTQIA+ community. We have always believed that sexual freedom of expression can come in many different forms, understanding the need to offer options for all individuals to feel seen, heard, and respected,” said Durex brand manager Camille Taguba.
2. Providing education for all
At the event, they provided “pleasure leaflets” and free condoms during the Eduk Hangouts, enlightening attendees about various LGBTQIA+ issues and showcasing their commitment to equip, educate, and liberate — enabling individuals to embrace their true sexual selves.
3. Pride For All, Pleasure For All: Providing safe spaces for fun
I also attended their recent “Pride For All, Pleasure For All” show at Apotheka in Makati City which celebrated LGBTQIA+ excellence, featuring outstanding artists and performers, including comedian Baus Rufo and Marky, with Jer Dee and Celeste Lapida on the DJ decks. Attendees reveled in fantastic performances by genderfluid drag king Alpha Venti, Drag Den Philippines contestant O-A (Odasha!), queer performer Nunoy Revlon, Drag Race Philippines Season 1‘s Prince Marell, and Marina Summers.
Everyone proudly and bravely wore their pride colors and iridescent outfits at the event, reveling in their true, gorgeous, and fabulous selves! A testament to how Durex was able to successfully provide a safe space for everyone.
4. Bringing the message of pride on social
To spread the Pride spirit further, Durex encourages individuals to showcase their pride colors on TikTok with the “Wear Your Colors” campaign. Influencers such as Lance Oca, Justine Pilarena, JM Yrreverre, and Killakushla have already embraced this movement, encouraging others to do the same.
You can access this as well by visiting Durex’s official TikTok page.
5. Offering special discounts, special bundles for a special event
Aside from advocating and educating people regarding safe sex (we’re all adults here, don’t be shy), Durex is also offering special bundles in celebration of Pride. Purchasing Durex grants you limited edition merchandise to add an extra touch of pride to your celebrations. These are available in select Watson’s branches throughout June, as well as via Lazada and Shopee.
We’re joining Durex in its call for pleasure and inclusivity this Pride Month — where everyone is encouraged to shine their true colors and celebrate love in all its forms. From one ally to another, thank you for walking the talk, Durex PH!
