Love cats? Japanese anime film ‘A Whisker Away’ to be released on Netflix this June

Love, magic, and CATS (a.k.a. “neko” in Japanese) — if these three words are interesting enough for you, then this upcoming hour-long animated film featuring a human-turned-cat may be worth bookmarking! Sailor Moon director Junichi Satoh, along with Anohana writer Mari Okada, are set to return with A Whisker Away on June 18, 2020 via Netflix screens.

Isn’t she precious? Meet “Taro”, who is originally a human named “Muge”! (Screenshot from Netflix/ A Whisker Away)

The story revolves around the life of a girl named Miyo “Muge” Sasaki, who fell in love with a guy named Kento Hinode. What caught our attention is Miyo’s attempt to get close to the love of her life by turning into A CAT, similar to Ariel’s method of giving up her mermaid life for the sake of love in The Little Mermaid. However, the trailer seems to be more promising than the usual lovey-dovey plot, so we’re all in!

You can watch the official trailer here:

Over on Netflix, a summary has already been provided for those who are curious about the film. It says: “A peculiar girl transforms into a cat to catch her crush’s attention. But before she realizes it, the line between human and animal starts to blur.” That’s about it. Pretty straightforward.

This cat’s so adorable, we’re definitely watching. (Screenshot from Netflix/ A Whisker Away)

This Japanese animated film features familiar voices for those who have been watching anime. Included in the lineup are Mirai Shida (from Studio Ghibli’s The Secret World of Arrietty and The Wind Rises), Natsuki Hanae (from Demon Slayer and Tokyo Ghoul), and Koichi Yamadera (from Ghost in the Shell).

In case animated films are not your cup of tea but you’re here because you saw a cat in the thumbnail, we recommend you to watch #CATS_THE_MEWVIE on Netflix instead. It’s all about celebrity cats and their life behind the camera. 😉
