This movie is way better than your ex and just as awesome as your bestie. We can attest to that!
A few minutes into the beginning of the film, movie-goers during the media screening of Pioneer Film’s The Spy Who Dumped Me were already on the edge of their seats as action-packed scenes flashed before their eyes. A few minutes more, everyone was laughing out loud at the hilariously relatable characters.
Effortless comedic punches landed well even in the midst of explosions and action – a chemistry that can only be pulled off by actors who know what they’re doing. Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon are no stranger to these genres. Add that to an all-star cast like Gillian Anderson, Justin Theroux, Hasan Minhaj, and Sam Heughan. Imagine Bridesmaids meets James Bond – that type of crazy mix!
The story follows the unexpected spy-filled adventures of two ordinary besties from Los Angeles — Audrey (Mila Kunis) and Morgan (Kate McKinnon), who accidentally got involved in an international conspiracy. No thanks to Audrey’s ex-boyfriend who shows up in their apartment with a team of deadly assassins on his trail, a few days after breaking up with her. The guts of these exes, right? The duo unwittingly jump into action, on the run throughout Europe from assassins, spies, and a suspicious-but-charming British agent on their trail as they hatch a plan to save the world. All that just to honor the memories of an ex. *face palm* It did something good to their life, though. Just like how obstacles like this did to women out there.
The Spy Who Dumped Me doesn’t fall short on showing how women can kick ass even after a heartbreak, how they can lead a team filled with men, and how we are capable of moving on from worthless exes – falling down once but getting up 10 times stronger. After all, women are stronger than how society makes them feel! It’s a feel-good movie that women can enjoy watching with their BFFs because sometimes, we’re left with our sister/s from a different mother.
Don’t get us started on the shoot locations, too! Europe is such an amazing place for classy spy movies, in our opinion.
“The idea was about two people who do not belong in an action movie,” shares comedy writer David Iserson. “But they have to survive when they find themselves in this really, really aggressive testosterone-y Bourne Identity kind of world.”
Fun fact: Director Susana Fogel first sent the script to Saturday Night Live star Kate McKinnon.
“I read all the scripts that were available in the known universe, and this one just jumped out at me as really fun, well-crafted, and really funny,” says McKinnon. “I loved the friendships so much. I loved that they weren’t fighting with each other. It reminded me of my relationship with my very best friend of 22 years, and I thought… I haven’t seen that recently. I want to do that.”
With McKinnon on board to play Morgan, the script was sent to Mila Kunis for Audrey.
“I have always wanted to do a badass girl action comedy,” says Mila Kunis. “It was one of the funniest, most obnoxious, wonderful comedies that I had ever read and it was super badass. This could be two guys… it just so happens to be two kick-ass girls.”
We’re giving this a 9/10. Leaving one point behind because we bet there are more hilarious scenes if they showed how the two besties ended up in their new job at the end. This is the part where we say: #MillennialApproved!
The Spy Who Dumped Me opens on August 1, 2018 in cinemas nationwide.
