Did you know that stress can affect our skin? According to Harvard Health Publishing, “psychological stress can also disrupt the epidermal barrier – the top layer of the skin that locks in moisture and protects us from harmful microbes – and prolong its repair, according to clinical studies in healthy people.” Science suggests that all types of stress can affect our overall skin appearance and even I have personally experienced acne breakouts and eczema flare-ups during stressful seasons! Now that we’re picking up a lot of anger, hopelessness, and negative vibes on social media, here’s a friendly reminder to still look after your wellness amidst the chaos.
Sharing five simple tips that you can try, even as you feel sluggish to get anything done (P.S. I feel you!):
1. Sleep! Keep your peace and rest as needed
Whether you like the current turnout of events or not, try not to stay up too late (unless you’re a troll who is tasked to make noise on social media 24/7). Get enough sleep! You can’t fight for your country if you’re perpetually stressed with all the negativities bombarding you on social media. Keep your peace when you need it, sleep to recharge, and let’s bounce back two times stronger after. Mental health is also important!
2. Maintain a healthy diet and exercise regularly
Keep your food intake and weight in check because what you eat can also reflect on your skin. Although rallies have already hyped us up to stay strong physically (and mentally), remember to keep your spirits up and continue to move – no matter what happens in the next few days. It’s okay to treat yourself to fastfood and processed food from time to time, but as much as possible, drink vitamins, eat vegetables and fruits to balance things out. Drink water, too!
3. Protect yourself from the sun
Use everything you can to keep your skin safe from harmful UV rays of the sun. Before heading out, remember to put on sunscreen, wear a hat, or bring an umbrella. Double the protection if you plan on visiting the beach (or marching on the streets) to de-stress, too!
4. Follow a simple morning and night skin regimen
No need for 5 or more steps of skincare every single day! Just make sure to wash your face and apply a protective day cream (preferably with at least SPF 15) in the morning after getting out of bed, take a bath, and apply a night cream in the evening before going to sleep. Products like the Cetaphil Brightening Protection Cream and Brightening Night Comfort Cream would be good options for such regimen. They’re easy to apply and they don’t leave a sticky icky feeling, too.
5. Use dermatologist-recommended products that fit for your skin type
In my case, one of the drugstore brands that my dermatologists usually mention is Cetaphil.
