LIST: Everything on our Netflix radar this January 2023

Happy New Year, everyone! Hope you all had a fun and fulfilling New Year celebration. For us, we’re making the most out of the holiday by catching up on recent Netflix titles such as Alice in Borderland, Emily in Paris, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery and Matilda. For those who are making the most out of business downtime that we usually only feel on the first few weeks of the year, here’s a rundown of everything on our Netflix to-watch list that seems promising:

*Note: I haven’t watched any of the shows yet, but I’m only basing this list on the trailers, summary, key visuals, and hype surrounding the titles.

Kaleidoscope

Release Date: January 1, 2023

As someone who likes heist movies and series (think Money Heist, Ocean’s Eleven), Kaleidoscope immediately caught my attention. As per Netflix’s description of the show, it’s about “a master thief and his crew’s attempt an an epic and elaborate heist wroth $7 billion dollars – but betrayal, greed, and other threats undermine their plans.” Aside from the plot, this series can be watched in ANY ORDER and you’ll still be able to understand the important parts of the story – a first on the streaming platform. While it doesn’t seem to be as immersive as the likes of Bandersnatch, I’m interested to see how the story differs depending on the way you watch it.

The Pale Blue Eye

Release Date: January 6, 2023

Because murder mysteries are fun to watch, here’s another one to consider: The Pale Blue Eye — a movie about a retired detective and an astute West Point cadet named Edgar Allan Poe who need to solve a grisly murder mystery at the U.S. Military Academy. Stars Christian Bale, Harry Melling, and Gillian Anderson, to name a few.

Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre

Release Date: January 19, 2023

Can’t get enough of the Junji Ito series? We can’t! So we’re definitely watching the upcoming Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre on the 19th. This will be featuring a selection of 20 macabre masterpieces such as “Hanging Balloon”, which you may have seen in horror memes on Facebook. Some of the stories are spine-chilling but there’s magic in Junji Ito’s creations that keeps us invested even if it makes us say “what the f*ck” out loud.

That ’90s Show

Release Date: January 19, 2023

Hello, Wisconsin! We could all use a good laugh and throwback to the good old days. For those who want something light to watch, That ’90s Show is coming to Netflix this year! It’s an American teen sitcom set in the summer of 1995, which can surely give us a dose of nostalgia. The show stars cast from the ‘70s Show, too.

Record of Ragnarok: Season 2

Release Date: January 26, 2023

What happens next in the battle between gods and humans? We can’t wait to find out. Coming from duels between Lu Bu and Thor, Adam and Zeus, Sasaki Kojiro and Poseidon, and Jack the Ripper and Heracles, this anime series is turning out to be quite an interesting take on abilities of gods and iconic men. It’s also fun identifying gods from different cultures and religions in every episode. Just don’t take the show too seriously as there are questionable scenes for history buffs. At the end of the day, it’s an anime. Make-believe. Fantasy.

In case you need more shows to watch, here’s Netflix Philippines’ “New on Netflix” overview for January:

  • The Way of the Househusband Season 2: January 1
  • The Lying Life of Adults: January 4
  • Woman of the Dead: January 5
  • Bling Empire: New York: January 20

Enjoy and may we all have enough time this 2023 to finally rest and binge-watch everything we want!
